A January 2008 IRC survey found that 5,400,000 people have died from war-related causes in Congo since 1998 – the world’s deadliest documented conflict since WW II.This crisis in the East of the DRC has been called the worst humanitarian crisis of the century. Currently more than 250,000 people have been forced to flee from escalating violence in towns in eastern Congo after renewed fighting between rebels and pro-government militia.
The Mwamba Family Foundation is working with local government to provide aid to this war torn area. We have started a fundraising campaign to send shoes, clothing, blankets, and cooking utensils to these refugee camps. Please contact us at mwambafamilyfoundation@yahoo.com if you would like to be involved. Monetary support is needed and welcomed. Please visit our Get Involved page to donate funds.
Mothers and babies are among those forced to find safety after continued fighting in and around their homes.
Hundreds of others were forced to take shelter in a abandoned school near a UN base, but later joined a stream of refugees leaving the area after receiving no help.
A recent report report offers an insight as to how life is in East Congo, based on a survey of 4,000 people.
Here is East Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by numbers:
55%: interrogated or persecuted by armed groups 53%: forced to work or enslaved 46%: beaten by armed groups 46% threatened with death 34%: abducted for at least a week 23%: witnessed an act of sexual violence 16%: victims of sexual violence
The Mwamba Family Foundation has sent over 3,000 pairs of shoes donated by children in the United States to aid refugees such as these.
So much help is needed for these refugees who live in inhumane conditions. They are in great need of basic items that are accessible to most such as shoes, clothing, and blankets.
The Mwamba Family Foundation is also organizing a "health drive" in order to gather as many basic medical supplies as possible and deliver them directly to aids relief worker in eastern Congo in the conflict zones. Time is of the essence!
